The music is key, but Emily Bestow’s design is equally strong. Great use is made of a revolve, which neatly switches from a frozen palace to the enchanted wood. Costumes are striking, too, with strong cuts, bright colours and some fabulous glitter outfits for DeeArna McLean’s Magic Mirror.

ABOUT THE DESIGN

A revolving set featuring 3 locations. The majority of the pantomime took place within the ice palace, so this was used as theming for the set extending outside of the revolve.

The interior of the dwarves cottage I wanted to be a warm and cosy contrast to the ice palace. The biggest challenge was the dwarves, which the director wanted as puppets, but also to not see the puppeteers. Originally it was written that they would all be asleep in individual beds, but I felt different objects as beds was more fun and helped the space be usable for other scenes. They therefore sleep in 2 hammocks, the sink, a drawer, a cookie jar, a pot, and in a cereal box, which I designed to be 'heigh-hos' instead of cheerios. Lights hanging above the set helped direct which puppet was speaking.
